A few miles west of Supply, North Carolina, a scattered colony of the
Yellow Fringeless-orchid came into view. As a member of our searching
group, I gazed with amazement at this find; this species is listed as rare
in the
Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas.
What more could a photographer want than to add a
rare native orchid to his collection of color slides!
My thoughts drifted
back to a book that I had read in the Hargrave Military Academy library in 1941: Thrills of a Naturalist's Quest by
Raymond L. Ditmars
.
In contrast to the rarer Yellow Fringeless-orchid, the Yellow Fringed-orchid is found scattered throughout North Carolina, especially in the coastal plain.
