Green Woodland Orchid

By William T. Hathaway

Green Woodland Orchid (Habenaria clavellata)

In July–August this little orchid is found in rich spring-heads and deep-shaded seepage areas in woodlands along the southern bottomland drain-off creeks of Smith Mountain. It is interesting that this specimen was photographed as it thrived among a thick growth of tall sedges; the Green Woodland Orchid was almost invisible except upon close observation of the site.

Access to the plant location is along the mountain road stretching along the south side of Smith Mountain in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
