Some experts think that the usual mushroom identification keys are unnecessary when trying to name this species. This sulphur shelf fungus has no closely related species that might be confused with its mature appearance.
I snapped this photo while on a field trip with Prof. Lytton Musselman, who was making a special study of the colonial shrub Nestronia umbellula. As we returned to our vehicles, we were both impressed with the Chicken Mushroom that we spotted growing from the trunk of a rock chestnut oak.
