Loblolly Bay

By William T. Hathaway

Loblolly Bay (Gardonia lasianthus)

This species is one of those evergreen shrubs that may develop into a small tree. The large flowers appear in July–September throughout the coastal plain of North Carolina. Low woodlands, pocosins and bay forests are suitable sites for finding the Loblolly Bay.

This photo was taken in Brunswick County, N.C. in August, 1977.
