Painted Trillium

By William T. Hathaway

Painted Trillium (Trillium undulatum)

This delicate little trillium is also called the Paintedlady or Painted Wakerobin by some visitors from the New England states. It is quite common on several side roads close to Mabry's Mill just north of the Meadows of the Dan along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. These pencil-striped beauties require rich, moist soils in shady woodlands.
