One of the pleasures in presenting my PittPaths articles is the opportunity to identify the photographed subject. On field trips most naturalists stumble across unexpected sights in the realm of nature. This pictured scale insect was a typical find that challenged my ability to identify the insect.
There are innumerable species of scale insects that make up their superfamily, Coccoidea. Lacking access to complicated insect identification literature, I allowed myself only to venture a reasonable guess as to the “what is it,” featured in my colorful close-up.
