Rosebud Orchid

Rosebud Orchid (Cleistes divaricata)

This orchid species is also known as the Spreading Pogonia. In May-July it blooms in the southern coastal plain of North Carolina and in favorable mountain sites in piedmont North Carolina. It prefers sandy pinelands, moist meadows and open acid, sandy soils.

At the time of this photo the flower was only partially developed; the lower lip spreads open with beautiful coloration when the flower is fully mature. This specimen was found in a savannah about a mile of so west of Supply, North Carolina, in Brunswick County.
