Shaggy Mane Mushroom

Shaggy Mane Mushroom

I couldn't resist placing my individual photos of the Shaggy Mane Mushroom in a developmental sequence (numbered from 1 to 4.) The gills and spores dissolve into a black inky mass, accounting for the name “Inky Cap.” This mushroom has been reported as having the remarkable ability to push up through asphalt, despite the softness of the mushroom's tissue.

A linear cluster of Shaggy Mains was neatly growing in a grassy lawn within the town of Chatham, Virginia; the species was clearly defined by the presence of young to older individuals.
