Swamp Buttons (Polygala lutea)

In bogs, pine barrens and savannahs throughout the coastal plain of North Carolina the Orange Milkweed “Swamp Buttons” can be found flowering from April to October. The rosette of succulent leaves, topped by orange-yellow flowers, is typical of the floral surprises awaiting any coastal plain visitor.

For those of us who are familiar with the flora of the Virginia Piedmont the variety of species found in the Carolina coastal plain overwhelms our curiosity.
