Of course, it isn't often that a botanist runs across a locally rare plant species. In my past years of searching and recording plants within Pittsylvania County there has been but one site where I have recorded Blue-Hearts (Buchnera americana). There was but a single plant at the discovered location; several visits to the site at later times revealed no Blue-hearts. Other flat, sandy fields similar to my present site included no Blue-hearts.
Factors contributing to the rarity of this species could be its disjunct populations and the advance of human activities; that is, open areas now used for crops and buildings for human habitation.
