Blue Mold & Coral Mushroom

Blue Mold and Coral Mushroom

The purpose of my photographic efforts is to help identify natural objects and features within Pittsylvania County. Both the Blue Mold and Coral Mushroom are part of the Kingdom Fungi — a biological division containing molds, yeasts, mushrooms, and other living organisms.

Occasionally, when warm humid air is upon us, conspicuous fungal organisms are on the scene. Hikers may run into dozens of mushrooms and other fungi that were not in evidence during drier weather. There are many mushroom species named Coral Mushrooms, but this specimen is unique in that it is being attacked by a Blue Mold.

In our marvelous world of living things, survival seems to be the number one priority.
