A path up the river from the Old Danville Country Club leads to an interesting area: suddenly, you find yourself alongside a slough. Plants and animals in this isolated, soggy place seem to have migrated from our eastern coastal plain. The prothonotary warbler nests in a cavity within a nearby tree. Several rainbow snakes have been observed slithering along the slough. Southern Rein-orchids (Habenaria flava) are scattered about, allowing the month of August to be the proper time for visiting one of our rare Pittsylvania County wild orchids.
