Noctuid Moths

Noctuid Moths

The Green Marvel and the Beautiful Wood-nymph are small moths that belong to the family Noctuidae, which contains abut 3,000 species found in North America. At nighttime (especially near wall-mounted porch lights) these moths can be seen; they appear as little triangular objects clinging to the walls with their wings folded almost rooflike over their bodies.

When finally mounted with their wings spread, the intricate color and patterns of various species is revealed. Both the Green Marvel and the Beautiful Wood-nymph have wingspans less than 3.6 cm.
