Beechdrops (Epifagus Virginia)

Epifagus Virginia

By William T. Hathaway

Beechdrops (Epifagus Virginia) is a herbaceous plant that lacks leaves and chlorophyll. It is parasitic on beech trees. It seems that it is present in every beech tree location that I have visited in Pittsylvania County. The species flowers in September until frost.

I took this picture with a flash unit, which resulted in the dark background.

Also see this illustration in larger format, and compare to Pinesap or False Beechdrops.
