Buckeye (Junonia coenia)

Junonia coenia

By William T. Hathaway

The Buckeye, Junonia coenia, is a late summer butterfly that breeds on the Gerardia plant, which blooms in August. Buckeyes often flitter just ahead of hikers on open woodland paths. Needless to say, this colorful butterfly is a favorite species observed by young naturalists.
