Toad Lichen:
on Sharp Top Mountain

By William T. Hathaway
Toad Lichen (Umbilicaria papulosa)

This is a close-up photo of a Toad Lichen. It was growing on the moist side of large rock exposures near the top of Sharp Top, one of the twin peaks of the Peaks of Otter in Bedford County, Virginia. Large patches of this Lichen are commonly seen by hikers on the upper trail. Several other Lichen species are also found on larger boulders situated at higher elevations. Lichens are year-around alga/fungi organisms.
