Wood Nymph (Cercyonis pegala)

Common Wood Nymph:
Rare in Pittsylvania

By William T. Hathaway

Although text books call it the Common Wood Nymph, it is apparently rare in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. This specimen was netted in a shallow sandy ditch surrounded by high growing weeds. The delicate wings called for careful capture as the specimen sailed along the length of the ditch.
