Target Moth

Target Moth (Automeris io)

When these moths cling to a wall or vertical surface, their top wings fold over the bottom wings, hiding the unique little targets. No local collection is complete without these noticeable, colorful examples.

The month of August is the time to search for this outstanding species named the Target Moth (Automeris io). Specimens have nearly always been collected after midnight at some bright attracting light. These two specimens were collected within the city limits of Danville, Virginia.
