Hemp:
A Plant Often Concealed

By William T. Hathaway

Hemp (Cannabis sativa)

Cannabis sativa (Hemp, Marijuana, Weed, etc.) is a native of Asia that is cultivated in many parts of the world. In our Pittsylvania County it is found here and there, and in most situations efforts are made to conceal the plant site.

Several years ago, while on a student bus trip to collect rocks for the geology class, one of the students sighted a crossbar stick supported by two forked sticks. Green plants were seen hanging from the crossbar. We left without disturbing the discovery; however, some students informed others that this was a drying and enrichment process well understood by drug users.

Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is not related to Indian hemp (Apocynum cannabinum).
