Puff Adder

“Puff Adder” is one of several names for the Eastern Hognose Snake (Heterodon platyrhinos). Photgraphs are as follows:

1. A view exhibiting the spreading head.
2. Front view of spreading head.
3. A profile of head and conspicuous snout.
4. A color variety of a local hognose captured in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
5. Plate 5 shows the characteristic of the tail which is often held in a tight, flat coil.
6. Plate 6 shows how the snake plays “possum.”
