Northern Red Salamander

By William T. Hathaway

Northern Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber)

On a field trip to Eagle Rock, Virginia, we stopped at a hamburger stand in Buchanan, a little town in Botetourt County. In a soggy area 200 yards north of the eating stand students found a small cave in a limestone formation. The cave explorers came out with this red salamander. Of course, the salamander was returned to the cave. This was the first time that any of us had seen this species of salamander.

My scanned color slide was dated May, 1978.
